Hello, my name is Lynn Garbutt and I am a fully qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT/REBT) and Couples Counsellor, based at Relationship Counselling Kent’s Ashford (Egerton) practice.
I hold a PGDip in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and have over five years’ experience helping both couples and individuals make positive changes in their lives and relationships.
In my experience, it is common for relationships to go through troubling periods. This can affect the health and happiness of both partners, as well as other family members. When emotions are running high, it can be difficult to appreciate and understand your partner’s perspective. This can lead to feelings of hurt, resentment, confusion, and loneliness.
At the beginning of our first session, I will ask you both what you hope to achieve. You may want help to make your relationship work better, support in separating more amicably, or perhaps you are unsure which direction you would like your relationship to take. It does not matter if you do not know, or if your answers are different – I will help you work through things to find clarity.
The therapeutic relationship between us is of the utmost importance in order for therapy to be successful. I will always strive to build a trusting and empathic relationship with you, tailoring my approach to suit your unique situation.
My style is down-to-earth and practical. I will help you work through issues step by step and may draw upon the tools of CBT to gently challenge you about the negative impact of unhelpful behaviours on your relationship.
The vast majority of issues in relationships are caused by poor communication. Couples often think they are listening, but they are not truly hearing or understanding what is being said.
In our sessions, I will help you:
It is important that you feel comfortable with me in order to get the best from therapy. Feedback from couples often describes me as warm, perceptive, and impartial, which helps create a space where both partners feel able to share openly.
I subscribe to and work within the UKCP Code of Ethics and the BACP Ethical Framework, undertaking regular professional development. I also hold full professional indemnity insurance.
