Couple Counselling Tunbridge Wells

Hello there. My name is Tim Gilbert and I am based at Couple Counselling Tunbridge Wells. I have been a couples, individual and family counsellor for over 8 years. I hold a Diploma in Relationship Counselling and a BSc (Hons) in Psychology. I’m also BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) registered.

Problems in relationships can be caused by a variety of different reasons. Therefore, in order for you to get the most out of the therapy, I will use an ‘integrative approach’. This will be from either a Systemic or Psychodynamic perspective. This means, I will explore what is happening ‘now’ in the couple relationship and develop an understanding of how our upbringing and past experiences define our relationships.

As individuals we are affected by our internal makeup and by external influences. For example, our upbringing, social experiences and how these affect our emotions, feelings and beliefs. Therefore, approaches to therapy are influenced by these two models in terms of what has happened in the past and what is going on in the present to yourself and as a couple.

My approach to relationship therapy

I understand that taking the decision to come to relationship therapy might feel quite daunting. So, with this in mind, my approach is both empathetic and supportive. I will help you quickly feel at ease, listened to and most importantly understood. During the relationship counselling process, we will explore the problems at hand in order to develop a holistic and comprehensive understanding of your unique situation.

Relationship counselling usually employs a process of change. Therefore, it’s important that you both feel valued and respected whilst working through what that change may look like in your scenario. I will encourage you to determine your desired outcome. Then, through the building of bridges, help you develop positive communication paths so you are able to move forward. This process will not only improve self- esteem, it will also allow respective voices to be heard.

Perhaps you are worried that there is a possibility of separation or maybe there are disputes within the family unit. My easy-going approach will enable you to be heard and empowered in order to reach a more positive resolution going forward.

My experience

During our work together at Couple Counselling Tunbridge Wells I will help you gain a better understanding of each other’s perspectives. This will be achieved through a calm, non-accusatory, therapeutic process. A process where you will both have a voice and be able to work through your relationship issues together for a sustainable outcome.

I work diversely and have experience working with same gender relationships. mixed cultures, families and friendships.

Ethical standards

I subscribe to and work within the BACP code of ethics and ethical framework. I undertake regular professional development to maintain a high level of knowledge and practice and regular supervision. My professional indemnity insurance is up to date.
