What Happens in Your First Couples Counselling Session?

What Happens in Your First Couples Counselling Session?

What Happens in Your First Face-to-Face Couples Counselling Session?

Taking the first step towards couples counselling can feel like a big decision. It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous or unsure about what to expect, especially if it’s your first time speaking with a therapist together.

The good news is, your first session isn’t about diving straight into every detail or deciding the future of your relationship. It’s simply a gentle, open conversation that gives both of you the chance to be heard and understood.

    A Calm and Supportive Space

When you arrive for your first session, your therapist will welcome you both and help you settle in. The goal is to create a calm, private space where you can talk freely without interruptions.

Your therapist will explain how sessions work and reassure you that everything shared remains confidential. You’ll then be invited to talk a little about what’s brought you to counselling and what you both hope to gain. There’s no pressure to say everything at once — this is about starting the conversation, not solving everything in one go.

    Exploring What’s Been Happening

Your therapist may ask a few gentle questions about your relationship, how you communicate, how you deal with disagreements, or what’s been feeling difficult lately. This helps them get a better understanding of your situation and what support will be most useful.

Some couples come to address a specific issue, like a loss of trust or ongoing conflict. Others come because they’ve grown apart and want to reconnect. Whatever the reason, your therapist will listen carefully to both sides and make sure each of you has the chance to speak.

    Understanding What Comes Next

Towards the end of the session, your therapist will summarise what you’ve discussed and suggest how future sessions might look. You’ll have time to ask questions and agree on a plan that feels comfortable for both of you.

At Relationship Counselling Kent, you can choose from a number of practices across the county, including Canterbury, Ashford, Maidstone, and Erith. Sessions last one hour and are booked one at a time, so there’s no tie-in or long-term commitment.

Leaving Your First Session Feeling Hopeful

Most couples leave their first session feeling lighter, more hopeful, and a little clearer about where to start. It might not solve everything straight away, but it’s the beginning of understanding each other in a new way.

If you’re ready to take that first step, we’re here to help.
