# How Couples Start Moving Forward Again

July 18, 2026

![Two people in black trousers and boots stand on a gravel path near a wooden gate.](https://rxvhnvwmfwrneowddnji.supabase.co/storage/v1/render/image/public/blog-images/when-your-relationship-feels-stuck-on-repeat-counselling-emlh7y.png?width=1200&resize=contain&quality=80)

It’s not always a big fight that signals a problem. Sometimes, it’s the opposite. It’s the quiet weekends that feel strangely long, the conversations about shopping lists and life admin that are efficient but empty, and the unspoken agreement not to bring up \*that\* topic because you both know how it will end.

This is the feeling of being stuck. It’s a place many couples find themselves in. It’s not necessarily unhappy, not all the time anyway. It’s just… flat. The momentum has gone, and you’re left going through the motions, wondering if this is all there is now.

One of you might try to push things forward, suggesting a date night or a holiday, only to be met with a weary sigh. Or perhaps you’re both so tired that keeping the peace feels more important than trying to reconnect.

## What Does 'Stuck' Actually Look Like?

In my work with couples, I’ve seen this pattern show up in many different ways. For some, it’s about having the same argument over and over again. The details might change, but the underlying theme of not feeling heard or valued is always there. You both know the script by heart.

For others, it’s a profound silence that has settled over certain areas of your life together. It’s the career change that’s never discussed, the intimacy that’s faded without comment, or the financial worries that are managed separately. This silence can grow, and what starts as avoiding one difficult topic can lead to avoiding them all. That’s when the feeling of living with a stranger, not a partner, can really take hold.

Often, this is tied to things that have happened in the past. An old argument or a breach of trust that was supposedly resolved keeps bubbling up, poisoning the present moment. It acts like an anchor, holding you in place and making it impossible to move on.

## Why Do Relationships Get Stuck?

It’s rarely one person’s fault. A relationship is a shared system, and getting stuck is usually a process you’ve both unconsciously contributed to. Life just gets incredibly busy. Careers, mortgages, children, and caring for parents can demand all your energy, leaving nothing in the tank for each other.

The relationship gets put on a to-do list that you never quite get to. Before you know it, years can pass, and the [connection you once had](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/how-to-build-a-healthy-relationship) feels like a distant memory.

Sometimes, staying stuck is a protective strategy. If you’ve tried to connect and been met with rejection or misunderstanding, it hurts. After a while, your brain learns that it’s safer and less painful not to try. You build a wall not to keep your partner out, but to protect yourself from more disappointment.

And let’s be honest, there can be a fear of what moving forward actually means. If you address the problems, where will it lead? The uncertainty can be so daunting that staying in a predictable, if unfulfilling, state feels like the lesser of two evils.

## How to Gently Start Moving Again

The solution isn’t a grand gesture or a dramatic, tear-filled conversation that fixes everything in one night. That’s the stuff of movies. In real life, progress is much quieter, slower, and built on tiny, consistent shifts.

**Start by Naming It**
The first step is often the hardest: one of you has to gently say, “I feel like we’re a bit stuck.” The hope is that the other person can hear this not as an accusation, but as an invitation. An invitation to look at the problem as a shared one, not as another thing to argue about.

**Lower the Stakes**
Stop trying to solve your entire relationship in one go. Instead of aiming for the perfect date night, aim for ten minutes of conversation without phones or distractions. Celebrate the small win of getting through a difficult topic without it escalating into a full-blown row. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.

**Change the Question**
When we’re stuck, we tend to ask questions of blame: “Why do you always…?” or “Why can’t you just…?”. These questions have answers, but they aren't helpful. Try shifting to [questions of curiosity](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/effectivecommunication-within-relationships-couple-therapy): “What’s it like for you when…?” or “Can you help me understand what you’re feeling?”. This isn’t about letting things go; it's about trying to see the problem from your partner’s perspective as well as your own.

**Look for the Pattern**
Every stuck couple has a dance. One person pushes, the other pulls away. One person gets anxious and seeks reassurance, the other feels pressured and shuts down. Instead of blaming your partner for their steps, try to see the whole dance. Once you can both see the pattern you’re caught in, you can start choosing to take a different step.

## How Couples Counselling Can Help

Doing this on your own is hard. You’re both so involved that seeing the pattern clearly is almost impossible. This is where [couples therapy can provide](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/does-couples-counselling-work) a different kind of help. A relationship therapist isn’t there to be a judge or tell you who is right. Their role is to help you both slow down and see what’s really happening between you.

At Relationship Counselling Kent, we provide a calm, neutral space – either face-to-face in [locations across Kent](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/locations) like Ashford and Maidstone, or through [online counselling](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/the-benefits-of-online-relationship-counselling) – for you to talk without interruption. It’s a dedicated hour to focus solely on your relationship, away from the pressures of daily life.

Couples communication therapy is less about learning clever techniques and more about creating the safety to be honest. It’s a chance to finally say what you need to say and have it be properly heard, perhaps for the first time in a long time.

We work with couples on a session-by-session basis, with no long-term commitment required. Our fee is £80 per couple for a full hour session, making private, professional support accessible. For some, a few sessions are enough to get unstuck and find their own way forward.

If you feel like your relationship is stuck on repeat, you don’t have to stay there. The first step isn’t about fixing everything; it’s simply about deciding you’re ready to try something different. If you’d like to find out if we can help, we invite you to get in touch to book your first session.
