# More Than Jitters? The Quiet Questions Before You Get Married

September 1, 2026

![Hands holding an antique clock with a question mark face over an old book.](https://rxvhnvwmfwrneowddnji.supabase.co/storage/v1/render/image/public/blog-images/what-to-discuss-before-marriage-9luqk4.png?width=1200&resize=contain&quality=80)

## The Secret Worries of Engaged Couples

The venue is booked, the invitations are being designed, and you’ve spent hours debating the merits of different cake flavours. Planning a wedding is a whirlwind of excitement, lists, and decisions. But sometimes, in the quiet moments – maybe while waiting for the kettle to boil, or lying in bed at night – a different kind of thought can surface.

It’s not a doubt about your love for each other. Not at all. It’s more of a quiet, hesitant ‘what if?’. What if we end up arguing about money like my parents did? What happens when the wedding is over and it’s just… us, on a Tuesday night? Are we really on the same page about the big stuff?

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know it’s incredibly common. In my work with [couples across Kent](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/relationship-counselling-guide), I’ve found that these pre-marriage anxieties are often the most difficult to voice. There’s a pressure to be nothing but blissfully happy, and admitting to any apprehension can feel like a betrayal of the relationship. But it isn’t.

## It’s Not a Red Flag, It’s a Road Sign

These questions aren’t a sign that your relationship is in trouble. Quite the opposite. They are a sign that you both understand the significance of the commitment you’re about to make. You’re not just planning a wedding; you're trying to build a life together. And building anything that lasts requires strong [relationship foundations](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/building-healthy-relationships-couple-counselling).

Thinking about the future relationship and its potential challenges is a mark of maturity. The problem is, these are often the conversations we don’t know how to start. They feel too big, too loaded. So we push them down and focus on the seating plan instead.

## This is Where Premarital Counselling Comes In

And here is the big misunderstanding. So many people think that counselling is a last resort, something you only do when things are falling apart. But what if you saw it differently? What if you saw it as a proactive, positive step – a bit like getting a personal trainer to get fit, rather than waiting for a health scare?

Premarital counselling isn't about looking for problems. It’s about creating a dedicated, guided space to have those important conversations you’ve been avoiding, but in a way that feels safe and productive. It’s a chance to explore your shared values and expectations for the future, building skills that will serve you for a lifetime. It’s a move away from the idea that relationships need 'fixing' and towards a model of consistent growth; it's genuinely about [learning how to be a team](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/what-happens-in-couples-counselling).

### What Sort of Things Do We Talk About?

It’s less of an interrogation and more of a guided exploration. We create a space to look at the unwritten rules and unspoken assumptions you both bring into the relationship. For example, we might discuss:

- **Money:** Not just budgets, but your beliefs about money. Is it for security, for fun, for status? Understanding each other’s financial ‘story’ can prevent so many [future conflicts](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/navigating-money-problems-in-uk-relationships-a-kent-perspec).
- **Conflict:** How do you handle disagreements? Does one of you need space while the other needs immediate resolution? We can help you find a way to ‘fight fair’ and hear each other, even when you disagree.
- **Family & In-laws:** What do holidays look like? How do you set boundaries with parents? Getting on the same page now can save a lot of stress down the line.
- **Intimacy & Connection:** How will you keep your emotional and physical connection strong through the different seasons of life?
- **Life Goals:** Careers, children, where you want to live. You’ve probably talked about these, but have you talked about the ‘how’ and the ‘what if it changes’?

The goal isn’t to find perfect agreement on everything. That’s unrealistic. The goal is to build understanding and a plan for how you’ll navigate differences when they arise. It’s about building the skills to ensure you don't get to a point where your [relationship still feels stuck](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/relationship-still-feels-stuck) despite trying everything.

## An Investment in Your Future

Think of it as the ultimate piece of marriage preparation. In Kent, from Canterbury to Sevenoaks, we spend so much time and energy on the wedding day itself. Investing just a few hours in the marriage that follows is one of the most valuable things you can do.

It gives you a shared language for talking about difficult topics and a toolkit for navigating life’s inevitable ups and downs. It sets a precedent that your relationship is something worth investing in, nurturing, and protecting. It's a powerful statement to each other that you’re committed not just to getting married, but to \*staying\* married, happily.

If you're wondering how to find the right support, the key is to look for someone you both feel comfortable with. The process itself should feel collaborative and supportive, not judgemental.

### How It Works With Us

We work with couples all across Kent, both face-to-face and online. We offer a calm, neutral space to have these conversations. It’s a straightforward, session-by-session process, with no long-term commitment required. Our fee is £80 per couple for a full hour session. You can have as many or as few sessions as you feel you need.

If you’re ready to move beyond the wedding planning and start building the strongest possible foundation for your marriage, we’re here to help. You can book your first session through our website or get in touch if you have any questions.
