# We've Tried Talking. Why Isn't It Working?

You’ve had the conversation a hundred times. Or, at least, you’ve started it. It might begin in the kitchen while one of you is making dinner, or in the car on the way back from Tunbridge Wells, but it always ends in the same place. A familiar, frustrating silence.

One of you might feel you’re walking on eggshells, carefully choosing words only to see them land wrong. The other might feel a rising sense of injustice, of not being heard, again. The volume goes up, or someone shuts down completely, and the original point is lost entirely.

So, the idea of coming to relationship therapy (https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/can-relationship-counselling-help) can seem… pointless. I get it. I’ve sat with many couples from all over Kent who tell me in their first session, “We talk all the time. Or we argue. How is paying someone to watch us do it again going to help?”

It’s a fair question. And the honest answer is, if therapy were just ‘more talking,’ it probably wouldn’t.

### It’s Not About Talking, It’s About Hearing

The problem for most couples isn’t a lack of words. It’s a lack of connection. Over time, we stop listening to the meaning behind the words and start reacting to the pattern we expect. We hear the tone, not the request. We see the criticism, not the hurt.

This is where professional relationship help is different (https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/finding-the-right-relationship-help). It’s not about giving you a script or teaching you clever communication 'tricks'. It’s about slowing everything down so you can both see the dance you’re stuck in. It’s about creating a space where it’s safe enough to say what you really mean.

A good therapist acts as a translator. When one of you says, “You never help around the house,” the therapist can help you both explore what’s underneath. Is it really about the washing up? Or is it about feeling unsupported, unappreciated, or invisible? Suddenly, a complaint becomes a vulnerable admission: “I feel like I’m in this alone.”

That’s a completely different conversation. And it’s one that’s almost impossible to have when you’re both caught in the heat of the moment.

### We’re Not Here to Judge Who’s ‘Right’

Another common worry is that a therapist will take sides. That one of you will be validated and the other will be told they’re the problem. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of what we do. As I often explain, a therapist is Not a Referee, Not a Judge (https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/what-a-relationship-therapist): What a Relationship Therapist Really Does is hold the relationship itself as the client.
