# What to Do When Your Partner Refuses Counselling

## What to Do When Your Partner Refuses Counselling

It’s a conversation you might have in your head a dozen times before you say it out loud. Or maybe you’ve tried to raise it, carefully, only for the topic to be shut down, expertly deflected, or met with a wall of quiet, stubborn silence.

You see the potential for change. You believe that talking to someone neutral could help you both break out of the negative cycle. But you’re met with a firm “no”. It’s a lonely and incredibly frustrating position to be in.

It can leave you feeling like an impasse has been reached. One person pushing for a solution, the other digging their heels in. And with every refusal, the distance between you seems to grow that little bit wider.

### Understanding the Resistance

When you’re the one suggesting it, your partner’s refusal to try counselling can feel like a personal rejection. It’s easy to translate “I don’t want to go to therapy” into “I don’t care about this relationship” or “I don’t think we have a problem worth fixing.”

But often, the resistance isn’t about a lack of care. From my experience working with [couples across Kent](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/locations), a reluctant partner is usually driven by fear.

For many, the suggestion of counselling sounds like an accusation. They hear: ‘You are the problem, and I need an expert to fix you.’ They imagine a session where they will be cross-examined, blamed, and told all the ways they are failing. Who would willingly sign up for that?

Others worry that counselling is the last stop before a break-up. For them, admitting you need a professional’s help feels like admitting defeat. It’s not seen as a constructive step forward, but as a formal sign that [the relationship is broken](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/how-to-fix-a-relationship-breakdown) beyond repair.

### When the Standstill Becomes the Norm

This dynamic, where one person is trying to solve things and the other is resistant, creates its own problems. You can start to feel like you’re shouldering all the responsibility, a situation we sometimes see when one person is doing all the emotional work in a relationship.

The original issues that made you suggest counselling in the first place don’t go away. Instead, they get buried under this new layer of resentment. You might find that when every argument feels like the same argument, this new conflict about therapy just gets added to the script.

Any attempt to talk about it might feel like you’re nagging, and their refusal might feel like they’re stonewalling. This is often when we see couples getting stuck in a pattern where trying to fix things just makes it worse.

### How to Approach the Conversation Differently

If direct requests aren’t working, it might be time for a change of tack. Instead of focusing on the solution (counselling), try focusing on the feeling.

**1\. Use ‘I’ statements about your feelings**
Swap “You never listen to me, we need therapy” for something like, “I feel really lonely when we can’t talk about this properly. I miss feeling close to you.” This is less of an accusation and more of an invitation to connect.

**2\. Frame it as a team effort**
Try saying, “I feel like we’re stuck in a rut and I don’t know how to get us out of it on my own. I was wondering if we could speak to someone to get some new ideas on how we can work as a team again.”

**3\. Demystify the process**
A lot of couples therapy resistance comes from misconceptions. You could explain that a relationship counsellor isn
