# Forget ‘Fixing’ Your Relationship. Try This Instead.

August 24, 2026

![Two sets of hands building with rocks and wooden blocks on a table at sunset.](https://rxvhnvwmfwrneowddnji.supabase.co/storage/v1/render/image/public/blog-images/how-to-start-repairing-your-relationship-wsgg2g.png?width=1200&resize=contain&quality=80)

The argument has ended. A tense, quiet truce hangs in the air while one of you makes dinner and the other tidies something in another room. You’re back on speaking terms, technically. But the real issue, the one that sparked the row, remains untouched. It feels like a huge, looming mountain between you.

In that quiet moment, the thought might land: “We have to fix this.” And immediately, your brain generates a to-do list. We need to talk more. We need to stop arguing. We need to have more fun. We need to sort out our finances. We need to get the intimacy back.

Suddenly, ‘fixing the relationship’ becomes a project of such enormous scale that you don’t know where to begin. It’s exhausting just thinking about it. So, you don’t begin. You put the kettle on, talk about what to get from the shops, and the mountain between you remains, casting a long shadow.

### The Problem with a ‘Fix-It’ Mentality

The very word ‘fix’ is part of the problem. It implies that your relationship is a broken appliance. That one of you is the mechanic, and the other is the faulty part. It sets up a dynamic of blame and pressure, a sense of failure before you’ve even started.

I've seen so many couples in our Kent practice get stuck right here. They come to us feeling completely overwhelmed, carrying the weight of this impossible task. They often believe they’ve failed because they haven't been able to figure out [how to fix a relationship breakdown](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/how-to-fix-a-relationship-breakdown) on their own.

But a relationship isn’t a car engine. It’s a living, breathing thing built from thousands of shared moments, unspoken understandings, and tangled emotional histories. You can’t just swap out a worn-out part and expect it to run like new.

This pressure to ‘fix it’ often leads to one of two things: grand, unsustainable gestures that quickly fizzle out, or a total paralysis where doing nothing feels safer than doing the wrong thing.

### A Gentler Approach: From Fixing to Understanding

So, what if we just took the word ‘fix’ off the table? What if we replaced it with something gentler, more curious? Words like ‘repair’, ‘rebuild’, or simply ‘understand’.

This shift in language is more than just semantics; it changes the entire goal. The objective is no longer to return to a perfect, mythical ‘before’ state. Instead, it’s about understanding where you both are \*now\* and figuring out how to move forward together.

Relationship repair isn’t a single, heroic act. It’s a process. It’s a series of small, intentional steps that, over time, begin rebuilding connection. It’s about clearing the path, stone by stone, rather than trying to move the whole mountain at once.

### Where Do You Start? The First Small Step

When the task feels monumental, the answer is always to start small. Ridiculously small. The goal here isn't to solve the problem, but simply to break the inertia.

What could that look like?

- [Acknowledge the distance](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/feeling-distant-in-relationship). Just saying it out loud can be a huge relief. Something as simple as, “It feels like we’re a bit distant at the moment, doesn’t it?” said without blame or accusation. It’s not a demand to talk, just a shared observation. This changes the problem from ‘yours’ or ‘mine’ to ‘ours’.

- **Create a tiny window of connection.** Don’t aim for a two-hour deep and meaningful conversation. Aim for ten minutes. Agree to put your phones away after dinner and just ask each other about your day, and really listen to the answer. It’s about creating a small, protected space.

- **Change one tiny pattern.** If you always collapse in front of the TV in silence, what if you went for a ten-minute walk around the block together instead? The change itself is less important than the act of consciously choosing to do something different, together.

These actions don’t solve deep-seated issues. But they do something crucial: they create a little bit of momentum. They signal to each other, and to yourselves, that you are both willing to try.

### Rebuilding Connection, Conversation by Conversation

Once you’ve taken that first small step, the focus can shift towards the real work of relationship repair: [improving couples communication](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/effectivecommunication-within-relationships-couple-therapy). This isn't about finding the 'perfect' words, but about changing the \*way\* you talk and listen to each other.

Often, when we communicate under stress, we’re not really listening. We’re reloading. We’re waiting for our turn to speak, to defend our position, or to point out the flaw in what our partner is saying. A key part of rebuilding is learning to listen with curiosity. This can be as simple as asking, “What’s it like for you when I do that?” instead of starting a debate.

So many arguments are fuelled by misunderstanding. One person says something, and the other hears something entirely different, layered with years of history and assumption. Learning to check in – “What I’m hearing you say is… is that right?” – can stop these escalations before they start. It shows you’re trying to understand, not just to win.

Over time, you might start to see the recurring patterns that leave you both feeling stuck. It's often the [same argument in different clothes](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/same-argument-relationship). Recognising these cycles is the first step towards choosing a different response.

### You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Trying to change long-standing dynamics on your own is incredibly difficult. You’re both inside the frame, too close to the picture to see it clearly. This is often when couples seek [relationship help](https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/relationship-help-marriage-counselling-couple-counselling).

Think of a therapist not as a judge or a magician, but as a guide who has a map of the terrain. We can help you see the patterns you’re caught in and give you a structured, safe way to have the conversations you can’t seem to have at home. The presence of a neutral person in the room calms the nervous system and makes it easier to listen and speak without the conversation spiralling.

Many couples we work with across Kent, from Sevenoaks to Canterbury, express relief after their first session. Not because anything is ‘fixed’, but because the problem suddenly feels manageable. The mountain feels a little smaller. They have a dedicated time and space to work on their relationship, with support.

At Relationship Counselling Kent, we provide counselling for couples both face-to-face and online. We know that the idea of committing to a long process can be daunting, which is why we work on a session-by-session basis. There’s no long-term commitment. Our fee is £80 per couple for a full hour session, giving you the space to decide what’s right for you, one step at a time.

If the thought of ‘fixing’ your relationship feels too heavy to carry, perhaps it’s time to set it down. Instead, you could choose to take one small step towards understanding each other again.

If you'd like to explore how we can help, please get in touch to book an initial session. We’d be glad to support you both.
