# Have We Run Out of Things to Do Together?

October 12, 2026

Do you remember when you first met? The easy conversations, the spontaneous plans, the simple joy of just being together. It probably felt like you’d never run out of things to talk about or do.

But life has a way of filling up. Careers demand more, children arrive, household admin multiplies. Slowly, almost without noticing, the space you once had for each other gets squeezed. The question, “What shall we do this weekend?” hangs in the air, unanswered, until you both retreat to separate tasks or screens.

You might look at other couples walking through Canterbury, laughing in a pub garden or exploring the shops, and feel a quiet pang. It’s not jealousy, exactly. It’s a sense of loss for something you used to have.

## The Quiet Drift into ‘Functional Partners’

This drift rarely happens because of a big argument. It’s a slow erosion of connection caused by a thousand tiny moments. You stop being partners in life and become partners in logistics. Your conversations revolve around schedules, bills, and what’s for dinner.

You might even be a brilliant team. The house runs like clockwork, the kids get to their clubs on time, you’re successful in your jobs. But when you finally stop at the end of the day, you realise you’re just two tired people co-existing in the same space.

I’ve spoken with so many couples from across Kent (https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/relationship-counselling-in-kent) who describe this exact feeling. They still love each other, but the friendship and fun that once glued them together has worn thin. The lack of quality time relationships need to thrive leaves a void that feels hard to fill.

### It’s Not About Having the Same Hobbies

A common mistake is to think the solution is finding a shared hobby. One of you tries to get into golf, the other pretends to enjoy sci-fi films, and it all feels a bit forced. The pressure to find the ‘perfect’ activity can be so great that you give up before you even start.

But it’s not about the activity itself. It’s about the shared experience.

It’s about creating a small bubble of time that belongs only to the two of you, away from the to-do lists and responsibilities. It’s about having a new experience, even a tiny one, that gives you something new to talk about.

A walk along the coast at Whitstable, trying a new coffee shop in Maidstone (https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/relationship-counselling-maidstone), or even just putting your phones away and doing a crossword together. These simple relationship building activities are often more powerful than a grand, expensive gesture.

## How Do You Start Reconnecting?

When you’ve been distant for a while, taking that first step can feel awkward. It requires a vulnerability that might feel risky. What if you try and your partner isn’t interested? What if you do something together and it just highlights how little you have in common now?

This is where talking about it can make all the difference. Sometimes, the most important shared activity is a conversation about the fact you don’t have any shared activities.

Our work in Canterbury couples counselling (https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/what-happens-in-couples-counselling) often begins right here. It’s not about us giving you a list of things to do. Instead, it’s about creating a calm space where you can both talk about what you miss and what you’d like your relationship to feel like again.

A therapist can help you understand the pattern you’ve fallen into without blame or judgment. We can explore what gets in the way of spending time together and help you find realistic ways of finding your way back. For many couples, it’s a bit like giving their relationship an MOT – a chance to check in and see what needs attention. A relationship counsellor provides the structure and guidance for that check-in.

### Small Steps, Not Giant Leaps

- **Schedule it in:** It sounds unromantic, but if your life is busy, you have to protect your time together. Put a ‘date’ in the diary, even if it’s just an hour to go for a walk.
- **Lower the stakes:** It doesn’t have to be perfect. The goal is connection, not a Hollywood montage. A slightly underwhelming day out where you still manage to share a laugh is a huge win.
- **Be curious:** Ask about your partner’s day and really listen to the answer. Ask about their separate interests. Showing you care about their world is a powerful way to reconnect.

Starting couples counselling (https://relationshipcounsellingkent.co.uk/blog/starting-couples-counselling-kent) can feel like a big step, but the process itself is very straightforward. It’s simply a conversation, guided by someone who knows how to help you both feel heard.

## Could Couples Counselling Help Us?

If you’re stuck in a cycle of good intentions that never quite happen, counselling can provide the focus you need. It’s a dedicated hour for reconnecting your relationship, right here in Kent.

We provide a neutral space for you to talk honestly about the distance that has grown between you. Together, we can work on rebuilding the friendship and fun that makes a partnership feel like a partnership.

We offer face-to-face sessions across Kent, including in Canterbury, as well as online sessions via Zoom. Our fee is £80 per couple for a full hour session, and we work on a session-by-session basis, so there’s no pressure for any long-term commitment. You can book a single session and see how it feels for you both.

If you’d like to find out more or book an appointment, please send us a message. We’ll get back to you promptly and discreetly.
